Walking in South Uist

Walking in South uist and the nearby area can be as challenging or relaxing as you want.

A one mile farm track leads to a faint footpath to the coastal area. It is a good place to stop and watch for birds and otters.

An easy walk of approx 2miles from Howmore along the beach and grassy tracks on the Machair past thatched crofters cottages and ancient chapel ruins.

From Boranais an excellent 3 mile walk along a grassy peninsula to the western most point of South Uist takes in interesting archaeological remains on route and many sea and coastal birds.

Off the coast of nearby Benbecula is the Isle of Flodaigh where seals bask at low tide.

The highest point on Benbecula is Rueval, a steep but straightforward walk of about 2 miles. A stony track from the landfill depot off A865 and onto a steep in places moorland path.

From Eriskay ferry terminal there is a circuit walk of approximately 3 miles, crossing the beach where Bonnie Prince Charlie first arrived through the main village made famous by the film Whiskey Galore and upwards for a great view over Eriskay. The rough moorland path is steep and boggy in places.

A shore walk from Eriskay ferry terminal of about 3 miles along a minor road and rough moorland taking in a hidden bay and the chance to see seals and otters.

A more challenging walk from Loch Druidibeag of 5.25 miles along moorland paths and boggy sections. A map and navigational skills are needed for this circular walk of contrasting landscapes of interior moorland and coastal machair.

And for those who want a rough and tough climb can scale the heights of the spectacular summit ridge of Benn Mhor and Hecla. There are no paths; navigational skills and a map are needed. This is approx an 8-10 hour hike of about 11.5 miles and should not be attempted in poor visibility.
